Instant Pot Duo Plus: An Honest Review (2019)
March 18, 2019
We purchased an Instant Pot Duo Plus just before Christmas, but didn’t get a chance to use it until the end of January. We absolutely love our instant pot! It is especially good for soups and we have made a lot of different types of soup. Everyone of them has turned out great.
Furthermore, we used it to make things such as ribs, pulled pork, & beef stew.
The flavor is amazing after such a short period of time in the Instant Pot. We won’t be going back to cooking soup on the stove anytime too soon!
Hamburger Soup in the Instant Pot
One of our family favorites is hamburger soup. The recipe is from a series of Canadian cookbooks called the Best of Bridge. This particular recipe is in a few of the versions:
- Best of Bridge Holiday Classics (page 146)
- The Best of Bridge (page 129)
- The Best of the Best and More (page 113)
- The Complete Best of Bridge Cookbooks Volume 1 (page 113)
You can find the recipe we use here.
Using the Instant Pot
The beauty of the Instant Pot is that you can saute your ingredients in the Instant Pot – then add your liquids and seasonings. Everything is done in one pot!
We found it best to prepare all of the ingredients ahead of time. Then follow the recipe starting with the saute feature. We fried the ground beef and onions together in a small amount of olive oil, then added the garlic at the end of the saute cycle.
Then we added all of the remaining ingredients and gave it a good stir. You have to shut the saute cycle off first, then put the lid on the Instant Pot ensuring the steam valve is in the closed position. Then press the soup setting and walk away.
It’s hard to remember how long it took, but we sat down with a glass of wine and before you know it, it was done! We are pretty sure it was less than half an hour when it beeped.
We let the pressure release naturally for 15 minutes when it was done. Then we released the rest of the pressure manually. The soup smelled great, looked great, and the barley was cooked to perfection. It was delicious and done in a fraction of the time.
On a side note, don’t forget to wear an oven mitt when releasing the pressure manually!
Conclusion on the Instant Pot
We have also cooked this soup in a slow cooker and it turns out just as good. However, you do have to give it 6 hours. The choice is up to you, either way, the instant pot is a great tool in the kitchen for those busy days!
We love our instant pot and strongly recommend it to anyone as you can make great meals in a fraction of the time usually required. We use ours at least four times a week.
